Communication about Pullman Public Schools Mid-Winter Break

When the 2018-2019 district calendar was planned, February 15, and 19 (note that February 18 is President’s Day, a holiday) were included as a mid-winter break, with the intent that we could hold school on one or both of those days to make up for any snow days. While those snow make-up days were built into the calendar with the best of intentions, with such late notice, we will not be using them to make up school for snow days. Our Pullman Education Association and Pullman Paraprofessionals Association have guided this decision. A few reasons for this decision:

  1. Many families and staff members have made plans/appointments for this 5-day break, and we would like to respect those plans/appointments by not asking people to cancel them with such late notice.
  2. With many staff having other commitments on these days, we are not sure we would have enough staff to adequately serve students.
  3. The weather forecast calls for more snow over the next week, so we can’t predict if we would be able to hold school on the 15th or 19th, even if it was scheduled.

This decision does mean that today’s snow day, and any additional snow days we may have, will need to be made up at the end of the school year. We are thankful to our staff and community for their understanding, and for their continual support of our district and students!
